Village Masterplan Fenit
2020, Kerry, Ireland
The project brief included historic research, desktop analysis and community consultation to design a masterplan for the village core that would facilitate change and resolution of conflict between the port activities and leisure for visitors and local residents.
The support of a thriving harbour and marina together with the ongoing development of the Tralee Fenit Greenway each has the potential to bring economic and social benefits to the village and its hinterland. There is a challenge in reconciling the often conflicting requirements of industry, community and leisure use. it is critical therefore that a clear and strategic village design proposal is established to inform future development, particularly if this is to take place in a phased manner.
The proposal includes the creation of new visitor amenities serving the Greenway trailhead and beachfront. Amenities will include changing rooms, toilets and bicycle storage and a lifeguard station. A revived public realm allows space for festivals and events and interpretation and information point. Further back the village core is reconfigured to improve transport routes to the port. A new village green overlooked by a new terrace of houses and a hostel will provide renewed focus to this popular visitor destination.
